Shoutbox is great for quick advice. Saves clogging up the forums with needless posts.

Out of interest does anyone have a reason for voting no to the shoutbox (as this seems to be the choice at the moment), if we were to have one then of course no one would be forced into using it, so is there any reason those who have voted no could not simply just ignore it? Only asking by the way, all views welcome

I ran a gaming forum a while back and the worst thing i did was add a shoutbox on my forum it killed the normal posts as most members would just use the shoutbox.
Im not saying that will happen here but for me it was a mistake.

I voted Yes now I said to myself would I use it, think I will never use it but sure other members would now thats my reason for voting yes.

i just think it will get to know each other better, and the satelite stuff is supposed to be a hobby, not a buisness, so it would make it a more friendlier site, and more members would know we are around to help each other too, when i sign into here i dont know whos on or offline, and it feels rather dead for a site. if u look at most big sat sites they all have them on and are doing very well with them too

Yes but keep in mind we've only been online (properly) for 6 months against other forums that have been online for years, and most definitely for me it's quality over quatity which I do feel we have here, and will only get better with the Wiki. I do take your point on it being a hobby and sure it is to many but not to everyone, we've got to remember we've got many types of users come here and we do offer support to for our [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], some (many) will consider it a hobby but there will always be those that don't. I personally don't consider a shoutbox will really make a great deal of difference one way or another to be honest which is why I've not bothered to vote myself but happy to hear views on it and the members majority can deside on this one!

BTW what about a compromise with something like a IRC chat room, maybe with a java interface that we could log in via, thoughts on that would be good?

Well the shoutbox system is OK for a quick hello but it should not be used for support that should be kept on the forum in threads as shoutbox messages would be mingles with other messages and it gets confusing.I would certainly not provide support via a shoutbox. I see a lot of shoutboxes used in a way that breaks forums rules and can create more work for Mods and Admin.
