What sections for you like to see on this forum?

We are really pleased with how this forum has now started to come together and move in the right direction but just like any quality forum we are very keen to get this forum to build to be even bigger and better! With this is mind feedback from members as to what sections they would like added to this forum would be great...

Remember its you the members that make this forum community, so please post what sections YOU would like to see added. We'll be happy to consider whatever ideas you come up with, I'd like to stick to the satellite theme but I'm also willing to consider other areas! Maybe not just sections, perhaps competitions, prizes or maybe a VIP members section or a file uploaders job for someone etc. etc.

I can't promise all the suggestions will be added but ALL suggestions will at least be considered!

So let's have your ideas and see what we can really make of this forum!

Hi, yoda, I'm a complete noobie to the whole linux satellite thing. An idiots guide to the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] mini would be very helpful, and an explanation of terms used i.e cline? etc,etc. I've had a look round and not found any from the beginning kind of forums.

The most important point for me is that the forum is friendly and that people are not afraid to ask what would appear to a seasoned user a silly question.

Maybe as previously suggested a project to install and update the image on the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], with a section for constructive comments on future upgrades. and users shared experiences.

This box seems to be fairly popular and new images are just staring to appear so it seems a prime candidate.....

Keep them coming all, it's great to get some feedback and suggestions and after we get a few more we'll move forward with doing something about them!

With regards to the above mate, to me that really describes what we already have, we have the how to install an image guide here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] we have a specific comments thread with each new SatStation firmware released which to me would probably cover comments on future upgrades as well ie. if you find something specifically wrong or that needs changing with this firmware you'd post here and it would be included in the next update, assuming it's firmware specific, if not and it's an addon then it's the addon itself that needs looking at and so I'd say warrents its own thread? And finally user shared experiences is fine but is that not what the forum as a whole is already about anyway or do you mean some other way maybe that I'm missing?

Anyway as I say please keep them coming, I'm looking forward to this giving me some work to do over the next few weeks

My own idea was maybe a totally new section for some dedicated Sky Digital / Freesat receiver and reception type chat, I'm not talking about any sharing or hacking type chat here, I mean a section that's all about using official equipment and perhaps a general section about programming content and that type of thing.

The forum at the moment seems to be specific to what I'd call enthusiast type receivers, which is fine and is where my own passion is but I'm thinking maybe some new Sky Digital / Freesat sections would open the forum up a bit more to other types of members, something maybe like they have on the Digital Spy forum, what do members think about that though, something that you'd like to see or are we trying to move the forum to something that it's not really about?

Some great ideas YODA and a very good initiative.

Some guides per each box would be a very good idea or something along the lines of a FAQ for each section.

Also would be good to expand into a Sky Digital/Freesat area, most of us also have a sky box aswell as our normal multi satellite.
Also how about a for sale section ? where members can advertise their second hand equipment ? may take a bit of managing but would be a useful addition as ebay can be expensive.

Will have a think further how to expand things and come up with some additional ideas.

I go with Benz' post above. I have three friends who would like to buy a Linux box but are put off by me telling them about the steep
learning curve. Not everybody has the time or enthusiasm to wade through google pages of info.
The idiots guide approach would sell more boxes for the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] at a guess

I'm hearing what you are saying with regards to the how to guides, maybe a newbies guide and it's clear that a lot of users or potencial users want this, but my problem with this, how could you ever have a one guide fits all situation especially when say a second tuner comes into it (like we have with the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]) as there are so many options that will all depend on a users own setup, like if they have fixed dish, motor, DiSEqC switch etc. once you have got say past the first couple of pages of the setup W-izard then it could fork off in a number of ways so it does kind of make it hard to work with from there, what does anyone suggest on this, I'm more than happy to work on some newbie guides but I just really not sure how it could be done?

Point taken Yoda. Was thinking about such things as FTP. I remember struggling with this initially. Easy when you know how.
I reiterate it is a fair old problem when first starting with a new box. In my case. due to pressure of time, I nowhere near use my VU box
to its potential and revert to a box where its all done for me (Protek).

The there's the problem of that which must not be mentioned. That cuts off some likely questions that would clear up doubts as to whether to ask a question or not in case items are related to it

Compare it with learning to drive. Can't be done without one to one help. So easy when mastered. Lessons, 'm told' run to forty hours or so in most cases these days


I don't get how the Free Sat / view, Sly section could help. Its all so simple. I really appreciate the help you give to us users on here though
