Which hd free sat receiver to buy.

Hello, i am after a free sat receiver hd and do not know where to start. I have a sky dish thats not in use and just need the receiver. I am not up to speed on these things and it must be easy to use. I had one some years ago and it was a nightmare to use so i got rid. I would like the receiver to have a card reader and usb but i do not want to pay to much for it, if anyone can point me in the right direction i would be very grateful, thanks mary2mick.

Sure there will be something that fits the bill for you, so card reader, USB, are you bothered about being able to connect to the internet with this receiver or not? If it's just for FTA (free to air reception) then you don't actually need this at all but if you perhaps wanted to look at doing a bit more in the future then it's probably going for a receiver that supports this.

The other things to keep in mind is most third party receivers when on 28.2 East (where Sky UK / Freesat broadcast from) will generally only offer you an EPG that supports now and next, there are some receivers though that give you a little better EPG than many for not a massive amount more, and then some which support it very well, how much of a deal breaker is the EPG, would now and next be enough?

    Hi Yoda

i am also new to this game. I got a [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] 5402hd and after a *few* teething issues I managed to get it all setup. Now i am looking to get another box for my dad who and I think I'll have a go with a linux E2 box this time. I have been contemplating getting the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] solo but there are so many different makes/models out there that appear to be offering the same function for less. What are the main differences between the cheaper models and more expensive ones? eg [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] vs [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] vs Dream?

There are very few (genuine) receivers that compete with the SOLO on what it offers against price, the new [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]es are not Linux or Enigma2 they are closed source, so not the same thing at all, the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] HD 800 SE on the other hand is genuine Enigma2 and while its no where near as well supported as the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] range at the moment the support it does have and is likely to have is good and will only get better plus the bottom line is it works and works well and does what it claims, so it's got to be considered.

The [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] range (genuine ones that is) will always attract a higher price because of the brand and the style (in my opinion), does that make it worth more against another brand that often does a similar job for less money? That's not for me to say, its one for your own personal choice.

One thing I will say is I don't like clone receivers and we don't and wont be entertaining them on here, they are best avoided for many a reason.

Choice of firmware is also very much a personal choice thing, they all essentially set out to achieve the same thing all be it in slightly different ways, there is no right or wrong as to what's best though, try them all for whatever model you go for and choose which you prefer.

Given the choice I think if it were a single tuner model I were after like the SOLO then I'd probably go the extra and get the UNO so I can have an internal drive as well as it being a better spec processor (never seen this affect day to day performance though) but again its personal choice and based on what I consider to be features I want, all the other models we've mentioned and even ones we've not still make great choices!
